De ingrijpende veranderingen die het domein doorvoerde begin jaren ’90, vertalen zich nu wel zeer nadrukkelijk in het glas. De combinatie van rijpe, volumineuze Syrah van hun wijngaarden in Chateaubourg en Glun in combinatie met een haast perfecte houtrijping, maken hun rode wijnen onweerstaanbaar. De laatste jaren beginnen hun witte wijnen, op basis van Viognier voor Caprice en Rousanne/Marsanne voor St. Peray en St. Joseph, aan belang te winnen. Het is ondertussen meer dan duidelijk dat de broers Durand op kruissnelheid zijn gekomen en zich ontegensprekelijk bij de absolute top van de respectievelijke appellaties hebben gevinifieerd.

Interestingly, the 2020 Saint Joseph Les Coteaux was presented both as a bottled wine in my blind tasting (where I rated it 92 points) and as a couple of barrel samples at the domaine, from Châteaubourg and Glun (I rated each of these 90 – 92). The wine kicks off with vibrant, mouthwatering aromas of violets, mixed berries and anise, and it's medium to full-bodied, with melted, supple tannins, a creamy mouthfeel and a long, intense finish that hints at dark chocolate, salted licorice and crushed stones. Could it be a bit more complex? Sure, but it delivers plenty of concentrated flavor and should drink well for at least a decade.
